Firefox OS Keon and Peak Developer Preview Devices

Developer Preview devices for Firefox OS unveiled

At last! We are finally able to see (maybe even purchase) some FirefoxOS based handsets. Mozilla has announced their first two Firefox OS Developer Preview handsets. The devices, Keon and Peak, look amazing, in terms of performance as well as design. But do not take our word for it, lets take a closer look at the specs and design to have a better idea of what the phones come as.

Keon

This is the first of the two developer device. Comes in a flavor of orange and as Geekphone.com say themselves it is “all you need to begin”. Indeed, this device should be more than enough to get you developing an app for the FirefoxOS and testing it out.

Here are the specs of the Keon device:

CPU Qualcomm Snapdragon S1 1Ghz
UMTS 2100/1900/900 (3G HSPA)
GSM 850/900/1800/1900 (2G EDGE)
Screen 3.5″ HVGA Multitouch
Camera 3 MP
Memory 4 GB ROM and 512 MB RAM
Battery 1580 mAh
Other MicroSD, Wifi N, Light & Prox. Sensor, G-Sensor, GPS, MicroUSB

While the specs of the Keon may not look so shiny, lets take a look at Keon’s cousin – the Peak.

Peak

The Peak device is indeed “one step beyond”. Packed with amazing hardware it should be more than enough to let the developers complete their daily tasks by using the FirefoxOS smartphone as well as develop some high-end apps and games for the new platform.

Here are the specs of the Peak device:

CPU Dual-Core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 1.2Ghz
UMTS 2100/1900/900 (3G HSPA)
GSM 850/900/1800/1900 (2G EDGE)
Screen 4.3″ qHD IPS Multitouch
Camera 8 MP + flash at the back and 2 MP at the front.
Memory 4 GB ROM and 512 MB RAM
Battery 1800 mAh
Other MicroSD, Wifi N, Light & Prox. Sensor, G-Sensor, GPS, MicroUSB

We must say that the devices look amazing, especially the Peak, which in terms of specs can compare to other every-day devices of today. These devices are yet to be released, but we are expecting them to be available sometime next month.

Meantime, we will leave you guys with a video of Firefox OS on a Developer Preview handset in action. If you do not understand the language in the video, just skip to the part where they are showing off the mobile operating system.

So they’re made for developing apps not for consumers, is that correct?

Yup. I would imagine the consumer devices will be rolling out not too long after the developer ones. These ones are to just kickstart the ecosystem.
